Relief money via texting surpasses $4 million

January 14 could be the biggest day for mobile giving to date, as word that texting “Haiti” to number 90999 to donate $10 to the American Red Cross went viral via Twitter, Facebook, and news reports. (Facebook reports that its users have been posting more than 1,500 status updates a minute containing the word Haiti.)

CES: Is Taser’s phone-monitoring product overparenting?

Taser International, the company that makes Taser guns to help law enforcement subdue unruly suspects, now has a product aimed at children. At CES, the company announced the Protector Family Safety Program–a series of products designed to help parents monitor and control what their kids are doing with their phones.

Windows phone date bug appears limited

Microsoft said late Monday that a text message problem with certain Windows Mobile phones appears to be limited to a small percentage of devices.

Since earlier this month, some phones have been receiving text messages that appear to be coming from the future–2016, to be specific. The problem appears to be limited to HTC phones running on Sprint’s network.

CES: Local TV could spur mobile TV adoption

Mobile TV may finally hit the mainstream when cell phones throughout the U.S. are able to access local TV for free.

The Open Mobile Video Coalition, an organization made up of consumer electronics companies, broadcasters, and mobile TV companies, has finished a standard for new chips that will allow mobile devices, such as cell phones, to receive broadcast TV signals. The new technology is already making its way into prototype devices and is being shown off here at the Consumer Electronics Show.

Verizon Wireless Updates Specifications For 4G LTE 700 MHz Devices

Verizon Wireless announced it will host a webcast on Jan. 20, 2010, to review updated specifications for wireless devices that will run on the nationwide 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network it is building on the Upper 700 MHz C-Block spectrum. Released today, the updated specifications address network access and SMS requirements and data retry test plans, as well as include new information about lab and signaling conformance, the open development device approval and introduction process and more. These documents will help guide developers into the next phase of bringing their LTE devices to the Verizon Wireless network.

Mobile sales to fall 0.7 percent this year: Gartner
